After some time in the Disability Focused Phase, and successful acquisition of the knowledge and skills needed to assist their child, mothers may move into a ‘balanced’ stage where the mother can re-focus on her own goals, other family issues and resume routines and interests around all family members.
Most parents shift from a ‘disability’ focus to a balanced or family focused phase when their child is at school, or later. At this time, the mother may re-connect with friends, resume work and spend more time with a partner and other children. Conversations include other more diverse topics.
Mothers know when they are in the balanced phase!
