What are strengthening exercises and why do it?


  • Prevent losing muscle mass with age
  • Build and preserve bone density- decreased risk of osteoporosis and fractures
  • Prevent falls
  • Speed up your metabolism
  • Manage and reduce risk of diabetes
  • Improve functional strength–lifting children

Examples of strength training

  • Lift free weights
  • Gym machines
  • Body weight exercises. For example, squats, lunges, dips
  • Yoga/ Tai-chi/ Pilates
